EF requires a teaching certificate (TEFL) to teach on our platform.
No certificate yet? Successful candidates can start certification during onboarding, and EF provides info on TEFL providers. Check out our HyperTeach course to get certified. EF sponsors TEFL for full-time hires in South Africa.

Our students live around the world and each country has its own regulations governing teacher qualifications. In order to set a standard, all EF online teachers are required to hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Note that we accept a variety of bachelor’s degrees, not limited to teaching or in English.

Absolutely. Online teachers come from a variety of different backgrounds. Often the best teachers are those who are interested in student development or in language. EF can help you develop as a teacher if you have the right stuff.

Unfortunately, no. You need to teach on a laptop or desktop computer. Full-time teachers will be provided with a computer. Freelance independent contractor teachers will need to supply their own computer, please refer to the technical requirements

Yes! We understand the last thing you want to be doing is figuring out new technology when you are facing students for the first time. You will be given a thorough introduction to our online classroom and time to get familiar with our tools before you start teaching.

EF has a global presence so we can also offer online help with technology and scheduling issues outside of office hours. Please note that responses can take up to 48 business hours.

Not at all! Our Academic team creates optional materials for all languages which can be uploaded into the classroom in advance. They are provided as an additional optional resource tool for you. This means you don’t need to spend hours planning lessons or preparing activities. Alternatively, you can always use your own materials and teaching aids if you wish.

Sometimes in private lessons, a student may request a lesson on a specific topic which our materials don’t include - you have the option to create materials relevant to the request.

We have lessons scheduled 24/7 but we do have some peak times where there are more students looking for available online English teachers on our platform.

In EST, these are:
Monday-Friday: 7am-11am
Saturday & Sunday: All hours

One-on-one private lessons are booked in 60-minute blocks, with 40-minutes devoted to in classroom time. Group lessons typically have 6 to 8 students and last 45 minutes, though are scheduled for an hour-long block. During the remaining time in your lesson block, you can work on prepping for your next lesson.

As an independent contractor you will be responsible for setting/opening your own availability. You can open your availability as far in advance as you want and modify it if you need to.

If you take on a full-time contract - you will have a fixed schedule.

You can join us as an independent work from home contractor from almost anywhere in the world. Most contracts are offered for a six-month term, with the possibility of being offered a new contract thereafter. Contractors are responsible for their own taxes, as no withholding is taken from payments.

If located in South Africa, you can take on a full-time employee contract to work form one of our offices.

You will be teaching adult learners from around the world, helping them improve their personal and professional communication skills. There are two main types of learners: Corporate Clients, who may work for multinational corporations or government organizations, and Individual Learners who want to learn a language for career and traveling purposes.
